"Alone"From childhood's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen As others saw; I could not bring My passions from a common spring. From the same source I have not taken My sorrow; I could not awaken My heart to joy at the same tone; And all I loved, I loved alone. Then- in my childhood, in the dawn Of a most stormy life- was drawn From every depth of good and ill The mystery which binds me still: From the torrent, or the fountain, From the red cliff of the mountain, From the sun that round me rolled In its autumn tint of gold, From the lightning in the sky As it passed me flying by, From the thunder and the storm, And the cloud that took the form (When the rest of Heaven was blue) Of a demon in my view. - Edgar Allan Poe "Alone." "Alone" by Edgar Allan Poe "Alone" was written in 1830. In this poem, Poe was expressing his sorrowful life from being completely different from his childhood to his death. In lines 6-10, I believe Poe is saying how he has tried being normal and find love, but he no luck. In lines 9 and 10 he is saying how he was bullied as a kid and that changed his life.
Later in the poem, In lines 13-22, Poe is talking about his adult hood where he has made some bad choices and now he thinks that he is not destined to go to heaven because of the storm over his head following him around when the rest of the sky was clear. -Ryan Sanders |
"The Lake"In spring of youth it was my lot
To haunt of the wide world a spot The which I could not love the less- So lovely was the loneliness Of a wild lake, with black rock bound, And the tall pines that towered around. But when the Night had thrown her pall Upon that spot, as upon all, And the mystic wind went by Murmuring in melody- Then- ah then I would awake To the terror of the lone lake. Yet that terror was not fright, But a tremulous delight- A feeling not the jewelled mine Could teach or bribe me to define- Nor Love- although the Love were thine. Death was in that poisonous wave, And in its gulf a fitting grave For him who thence could solace bring To his lone imagining- Whose solitary soul could make An Eden of that dim lake - Edgar Allan Poe "The Lake." "Romance"Romance, who loves to nod and sing,
With drowsy head and folded wing, Among the green leaves as they shake Far down within some shadowy lake, To me a painted paroquet Hath been- a most familiar bird- Taught me my alphabet to say- To lisp my very earliest word While in the wild wood I did lie, A child- with a most knowing eye. Of late, eternal Condor years So shake the very Heaven on high With tumult as they thunder by, I have no time for idle cares Through gazing on the unquiet sky. And when an hour with calmer wings Its down upon my spirit flings- That little time with lyre and rhyme To while away- forbidden things! My heart would feel to be a crime Unless it trembled with the strings. - Edgar Allan Poe "Romance." Poetry Lovers' Page. N.p., n.d. Web. 21 Apr. 2013. |
"Romance" by Edgar Allan PoeIn "Romance" Poe is saying how love is something that everyone doesn't find or have. Love is something you could find easily or it could take you a long time.
Edgar is saying later in the poem how he basically just waited for love to come to him, instead of going to find it. That he said was the mistake, you should find love never wait for it and that makes happiness. - Ryan Sanders |
"The Lake" By Edgar Allan Poe In "The Lake" , Poe says in lines 1-6 that he spent his time during the day sitting around this quiet lake that he could share his thoughts.
Later in the poem Edgar said that during the day it was peaceful but once the sky turned to night, people came down to the lake and it became a party spot. Toward the end of the poem it talks about how when he would wake he would see the lonely lake again and that he was a lonely person and that the lake could easily be the death of him. - Ryan Sanders |
